Are you ready to help save local journalism and strengthen democracy? Report for America deploys talented emerging journalists into local news organizations to report on under-covered communities and crucial issues.

One of nine positions currently available will place a Report for America corps member at KRWG TV/FM, which operates NPR and PBS stations and a news website, krwg.org. KRWG is located at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and serves southern New Mexico, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

The Report for America corps member will do radio, TV and print pieces, covering education, healthcare, economic development and sustainability in a challenging desert environment.

The deadline to apply is March 23. Winners will be notified in April and hit the ground in June. The term is one year but may be extended for a second.

Report for America corps members will also be doing community service projects, such as helping a local high school start or improve their student-run news site or newspaper.

Each selected cohort of Report for America corps members will gather for an intensive training — including advanced use of Google tools (taught by Google News Lab), covering municipal finance, and solutions journalism.

The first three corps members have already deployed in Appalachia, where they’re crushing it.

QUALIFICATIONS

Report for America corps member positions are open to anyone who wants to be a local journalist — and has the skills and character to make an immediate difference. You’ll be doing important public service journalism in under-covered communities.

This program targets emerging journalists, but is not restrictive of age. Candidates may be right out of school, have a few years of journalism experience or have experience in related fields that lend themselves to strong reporting. We seek candidates who have the analytical skill set to understand and unpack the nuances of pressing issues in the regions where RFA corps member will be working, and the creativity to frame issues with a fresh and socially relevant perspective.

Successful candidates will demonstrate not only a passion for journalism, but a commitment to public service. Candidates from any part of the United States are welcome. We’ll ensure a diverse team — not only in terms of race, ethnicity and gender but also income, geography, viewpoints and background
