Everyone knows that the best reporting is on-the-ground reporting. But newsroom budgets are tight and editors who spring for mileage costs are becoming increasingly rare.
Fret no more. SPJ has got your back.
By noon on December 6, send us your pitch (which should include a brief story description and explanation of how travel will benefit the reporting, as well as your SPJ member number), a written promise to publish the story from your editor, and an estimate of your mileage costs. We’ll announce the travel scholarship winners at the SPJ holiday party on Dec. 13 at the Art Bar in Albuquerque.
Rules:
1. Open to current SPJ – Rio Grande Chapter members only. (2013 Rio Grande Chapter board members aren’t eligible to apply.)
2. After the trip, when scholarship winners have submitted odometer readings and a Map Quest document, the Rio Grande Chapter will reimburse reporters for mileage at 0.51/mile.
3. Send your story pitch and editor’s promise to laura.paskus@gmail.com by noon on Dec. 6. The Rio Grande Chapter board of directors will evaluate proposals and issue its decision(s) on Dec. 13.
4. Deadline for the next round of scholarships will be March 1.
