As we work toward improving the skill sets of journalists in New Mexico and West Texas—and toward better serving our members—the Rio Grande Chapter of SPJ is offering scholarships for four journalists to attend the Computer Assisted Reporting bootcamp hosted by Investigative Reporters and Editors in Columbia, Missouri on Aug. 5-9, 2018 or the CAR Boot Camp, Oct. 13-16 at the University of Indianapolis.

We will reimburse successful applicants for airfare/travel, meals, five nights of lodging, and the CAR bootcamp fee—up to $2,500 total—once the training has been completed.

To apply for the scholarship, you must be an SPJ member. If you’re not already, visit https://www.spj.org/join.asp to join now.

To read more about CAR bootcamps in general, visit: http://ire.org/events-and-training/boot-camps/car/ And here’s a link to the bootcamp you’d attend in August: https://irenicar.wufoo.com/forms/2018-car-boot-camp-august/

In fewer than 600 words, let us know:

  • Who you are and where you work (or where your work is published) and how attending the bootcamp will improve your reporting
  • How you’ll give back to your community of journalists and in New Mexico and West Texas and share what you’ve learned
  • Your SPJ member number

Please also provide a letter of support from your editor or news director. Or, if you’re a freelancer, a letter of support from an editor who works with you often and knows your work well.

Send your letter to: sylviadulloa@gmail.comcjproctor74@gmail.com & ggrammer80@gmail.com by July 27.  Good luck, and happy data mining!
